There we were, pottering in a rockpool near Filey, Yorkshire, when we saw a beadlet anemone. Common as muck, these things. They just sort of sit there, just being blobby in a crimson, static kind of way. They might have a few tentacles out, for a spot of wafting.

Next time you see one, get on your hands and knees and have a really close look. See those blue beads at the base of the tentacles? They’re not decoration – they’re weapons. If another anemone comes too close, those blue beads swell up into whacking, thwacking, sting-covered clubs that can inflict serious damage. I’ve found this 30 sec video that shows this beautifully.
